BTEC Level 2 First Award in Business
What is the Aim of the Course?
BTEC First qualifications are designed to provide students with the opportunity to study in the context of a vocational sector. The skills learnt will aid progression to further study and prepare students to enter the workplace in due course. In the business sector, students would be aiming to move into entry-level roles, such as assistants in business administration, marketing, finance, human resources, sales and customer service.
Exam Assessment Details
Year 10 –
- Unit 1 – Enterprise in the Business World
- Unit 4 - Principles of Customer Service
Year 11 –
- Unit 2 – Finance for Business (external exam)
- Unit 6 – Introducing Retail Business
What will I Do?
Year 10: A series of internally assessed coursework assignments that covers:
Unit 1: Enterprise in the Business World.
On completion of this unit the student should:
- Know how trends and the current business environment may impact on a
business.
- Plan an idea for a new business
- Present a business model for a business start-up.
Unit 4: Principles of Customer Service.
On completion of this unit the student should:
- Understand how businesses provide customer service
- Demonstrate appropriate customer service skills in different situations.
Year 11: A series of internally assessed coursework assignments and an external exam that covers:
Unit 2: Finance for Business (external exam)
On completion of this unit the student should:
- Understand the costs involved in business and how businesses make a profit.
- Understand how businesses plan for success
- Understand how businesses measure success and identify areas for improvement.
Unit 6: Starting a Small Business
On completion of this unit the student should:
- Explore the structure and organisation of retail business
- Investigate the relationship between retail business and the external
environment.

What is the Aim of the Course?
You will be able to understand the business world which you will enter after finishing school/college/university.
- You will be able to make informed decisions and put forward arguments to persuade others. You will develop skills of evaluation and problem solving.
- You will have the knowledge to help you set up a business of your own.
Exam Assessment Details
- Two exams at the end of the course, each 90 minutes long. There is no controlled assessment.
- Some questions will be multiple choice, some will be extended writing to test your ability to explain why you made a particular decision.
What will I Do
- Marketing, including advertising, development of products, setting the best price.
- Recruitment, including how businesses get the right staff and keep them working well.
- Business structures, including the different ways to set up a business.
- Finance, including how businesses get the money to set up and operate and how they make a profit.
- Business operations, including how businesses produce the things we buy.
- Influences on businesses, including the environment and how many businesses are operating around the world.
Internal Assessments
Teachers will internally assess student progress at the end of each topic area.

What is the Aim of the Course?

Exam Assessment Details
Two exams at the end of the course. The first exam is 60 minutes long and the second one is 90 minutes long and based on a pre-release case study. You will complete 3 pieces of controlled assessment set by the exam board.
- In the exams some questions will be multiple choice, some will be extended writing to test your ability to explain why you made a particular decision.
What will I Do
- Marketing: You will complete some market research and data collection. You will study the marketing mix and look at marketing in the wider business environment. You will investigate enterprise and the entrepreneur, looking at how a business plans
- The structure of business activity: You will look at the need for business activity, business ownership, trading organisations, growth and location. You will look at the workforce in business, considering employment and retention and how organisations communicate.
- Using and managing resources to produce goods and services: You will be looking at types of production methods, management and control of production, production costs as well as an understanding of financial information and decision making. You will have an understanding of sources of finance, financial forecasting and analysis as well as external influences on business activity and the competitive environment. You will investigate environmental influences and business ethics as well as looking into the government and the UK economy

Teachers will internally assess student progress at the end of each topic area and through controlled assessments.

All units are split into smaller assignments which will be assessed by the teacher throughout the course. A resubmission opportunity will be permitted as long as the teacher believes the student can improve their work

What is the Aim of the Course?
The BTEC Level 2 qualifications in WorkSkills (QCF) help learners to improve their understanding and application of work-based skills. This flexible, vocational course teaches the knowledge, skills and understanding that are relevant, current and useful for both learners and potential employers. Some students may be given the opportunity to complete additional units to achieve the Extended Certificate based on their progress in lessons.
